View Full Version : Gas Mileage
batmanofasheville 11-15-2007, 10:36 PM I just bought a 2003 Excursion with the V10 engine and love it by the way. However I am trying to see if there is anyway to boost my gas mileage. Right now I am getting 13-14mpg in the city and 18-20mpg on the highway. Any suggestions?
codtraps 11-22-2007, 05:26 PM Try using a K & Nairfilter, that will save you a bit but remember it is aV-10
BRETM 12-05-2007, 07:16 PM If your truck, needs a tune up it will also affect you mileage.
batmanofasheville 12-17-2007, 04:03 AM Thanks for the info. However, a K&N filter will raise by horsepower by 12 @ 4150rpm. I'm wondering if spending almost $300 will pay off in the long run. I mean I do not want to spend $300 if it is only going to increase my gas milage by a couple of gallons per mile.
94Blk5.0 12-17-2007, 11:48 PM A K&N filter (not intake) will cost about $40-50. Your best bet may just to make sure you keep a clean paper filter in it. Don't forget tire pressure, oil/fluids, fuel filter, and plugs and wires( depending on how many miles are on it) A free flow muffler can help increase MPG, granted you don't drive it any harder to hear it. Also try to take it easy with the gas pedal as much as you can. You seem to be doing pretty good as is.
wisconsinwildman 12-18-2007, 01:03 AM You're doing pretty darn good getting that kind of mileage out of it. I know a lot of 150's that aren't getting that, but I'd agree with the other posters, tires and pressure, oil and definitely a good quality clean air filter.Did anyone mention a new fuel filter, not sure how many miles you have on the truck. If you do get it upto 17-18 lets us know what you did, I'll try the tricks on my 150 to get her over 20.
batmanofasheville 12-20-2007, 01:03 AM Thanks, and it has 47,000 miles on it coming up for it 50,000 mile check and I will let everybody know what I have done if I get it increased.
griffithyears 12-21-2007, 10:41 PM Hey, I just got an '04 6.0 and I had a K&N on the Bronco that I traded in on it. Do they make a K&N for the Diesel or is the factory filter with the gauge on it the best way to go?

griffithyears 12-21-2007, 10:55 PM Woof!!! I just checked online with the K&N site and saw the price for the 6.0 air filter... I think I'll make a few car payments first before I can go for that one!!!
batmanofasheville 12-27-2007, 10:25 PM Has anyone put dual exhaust on their Excursion. Or can you even put dual exhaust on a V-10? If so how did it effect your gas mileage?
NITROUSMIKEY 12-27-2007, 11:44 PM MY V10 GETS 8.5 TO 9.5 AROUND TOWN AND NOT MUCH MORE ON THE HWY.
MUST BE THE 4.30 GEAR?
WISH I HAD YOUR MILEAGE.
stux4 02-28-2008, 08:19 PM My 01 5.4 with 48k on it gets 9.7-10.3 in city driving and the best on a long trip was 14.2 i set the cruz for over 100 miles non stop.
i only use mobil gas 87. i am happy but we all want better MPG
How the hell are you getting that kind of fuel economy? What are your program codes? How is your excursion set up? Please do share. Man, that's awesome. If I can get that kind of mileage, I'd forget about the diesels.

ironmonkey 12-18-2009, 03:32 PM I put Duals on mine and it gave it some more horse power. It didn't help the gas mileage! It sure makes it sound nice, be careful it will make your foot get heavy listening to them roar!
