I loved Bias ply tires. They rode better and exploded safer. Steel belts make hellish shrapnel. But anything that old - I'd look for sidewall dryrot (fine cracks)first. Some 15" tires will not fit other 15" rims. Width IS a factor. If you take a tire off an abnormally wide (not stock) rim and try to put it on a new skinny rim it's basicallya no-go. Also (to argue the bias ply theory) I never slit open my hands oon a corded belt - steel belts though I saw a guy shred his hand once. Steel belts aren't so great, and metal belts dent - cords resist. Think of that the next time your steel belts hit a bad area of the road and get unbalanced beyond the ability for repair.
