Let me preface this question with some background. I'm have a lot of tools and can fix just about anything on the truck, but I need help diagnosing the problem.

Here's the problem: 2000 Expedition, 4wd, 5.4L. When driving slowly, the shift between gears 1-2 (I think, might be 2-3) is extremely harsh. Its like if you had a manual tranny and just snapped the clutch wihtout dropping the revs at all. Local tranny shop has looked at it, and they found it to be throwing no codes. Mechanically they said it is fine, they were kind of baffled. I trust these guys, they have a history as a reputable independant shop and they don't rape customers. They THINK it's the actuator.

If I recall, it is replaceable externally, without having to drop the tranny.

Can someone tell me some info that will help me solve the problem:

What is the tranny model #?
Can someone point me to a pic or describe the location of the actuator?
Can someone tell me is it simple to replace?

Anyone have any opinions or recommendations?

THANKS for your help.

I don't know which tranny it is, how can I tell? Is the accumulator accesible with the tranny in the truck or do I need to drop the tranny?

Thanks for the help.

Got the same problem. 2000 XLT(5.4, 4x4) with 111K miles on it. Had a full tranny service at 100k. When shifting between 1 & 2 on the way up it sort of shifts late at a higher RPM. Maybe 1 out of every 6 times.

Where should I be looking???
