Hello guys i am new to this forum. I will admit i am a Mopar guy so i'm new to this Ford stuff but am liking it already. I used to buy nothing but Mopar. Now i have two Fords and only one Mopar! I just bought a nice 1980 Ford Fairmont with 53,000 original miles. It is in great shape and runs almost perfect. I am having two problems which i hope you all can help me with.

First one is when i first start the car and it isn't up to operating temp yet. I pump the pedal twice before i turn the key. It always starts right away but if i don't give it gas it will die for the first 30 seconds or so. After that it will idle fine on it's own. Then i let it run for a couple minutes before i drive away. When i give it some gas to go it will hesitate and sound like it is not getting enough gas. If i pump the pedal it will try to go but if i just push it down it will stumble and die. Once it gets up to about 10 mph it will drive fine the problem is just getting it to go. Then once the car is up to operating temp it drives fine even from dead stops. This is my first car i have ever owned with a carb so maybe i am not letting it warm up enough?

The second problem i am having happens when the car is at operating temp and i shut it off. If it is just shut off for a few minutes like while fueling it will start back up no problem. However if i shut it off for longer it will have a hard time starting again. Like i was shopping the other day and it was shut off for about 30 minutes. When i came back out it took a few minutes to restart. I tried by giving it no gas at first, then i pumped it a few times, and finally just held the pedal down while cranking. It always starts back up it just takes quite a bit of cranking over. It only does this when parked for a while. If it is allowed to completely cool down it will start up no problem. I have no idea as to what would cause this.

I have replaced the spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, and fuel filter. Along with all the fluids changed because the car sat for a while before i bought it. I was hoping it was just bad gas from sitting but i have filled it up after driving it near empty 4 times now.

Anyone have any ideas of what might be the problem?

EDIT: I forgot to mention it has the 200ci inline 6 engine and the big bad 1 BBL carb. :P

Sound's like carburetor trouble to me. The cold starting/running problem is in the choke circuit. The hot restart problem is a leaking power valve. Have a good carburetor man rebuild the carburetor and you should be good to go.

usually the inline6 fairmonts are known for that. for some reason the monojet carb is messed up like that, and you really doon't have a way to fix it...
My 79 has the same setup as yours.
just make sure the electric choke is hooked up properly, and try the carb rebuild just to make sure...

Can you replace that 80 Fairmont 6 carb with a different carb? I have the same problems with my sons Fairmont 200 6.
I have a 1971 pinto carb available - will that bolt on? What reliable carb will bolt onto the Ford 200-6?

I've been told that a 1971 pinto carb will bolt on -
and I'm not worried about making the linkage set-up work.
Does anyone know?

P.S. - I've been told this 200 6 was made for quite a few years by Ford.
What was the BEST carb they put on it.

P.P.S. - That 200 6 head is kind of funky looking with the intake manifold cast right into it!

the carb was made spacifically for the Fairmont/Zeypher. the only other one that would fit is the monojet from a chrysler slant6. the Holley1947(ford) model is a modified 1946(mopar) You cannot swap the manifold, as you may have already noticed. (cast on) either rebuild it, or get an exact replacement.

once I drop the 302 into my '79 i'll sell you my carb, and other "hard to finds"

There were rare intakes that used the small ford 2 barrel carbs. I'm not sure if any vintage 6 cylinder racing stuff is still around town?

I found this forum by Googling for headers to fit a 200 Fairmont.
It brought me to this thread, and I thought I would chime in for the benefit of future reference on the question of carb interchange. My son has a Fox Fairmont with the junk Holley 1v carb. PURE JUNK!

I am old school and love super simple, user friendly, and easily tuned carbs. The Holley 4v carbs are the answer. The Carter (aka: Edelbrock) 4v carbs are the 'anti-user friendly 4v. So this whole thing was totally backwards for me.

In the case of the 200, the Holley is the anti-user carb, while the Carter is pure and simple bliss. The Carter RBS 1v that came stock on some Mavericks is simple, user friendly, tough, and easily tuned in the same spirit of the Holley 4v. The Holley 1v is not tuneable, doesn't take to rebuilds, and wasn't a very good carb when it was new.

When you go after your Carter 1v, just remember to grab the spacer plate between the carb and intake. The Carter won't fit the Holley spacer plate.

Now back to your regular programming!
