Default intermittent overheating--a/c comes on when heat turned on...

...lately, my heat has been taking a loooong time to come on, tho temp gauge was normal. then it rained for a few days and when i started up, the revs were very low--i stalled a few times, then seemed ok, but engine light came on. next day, all seemed well, light shut off. now, my temp gauge never goes above 1/3, but next day, i almost overheated [a mile from home]--my idle seemed high at this time. heat would not come on. then, since i was waiting on the heat, i noticed revs going up and down--whoa--the a/c was coming on each time i put the heat on! disconnected the a/c, but the revs still varied as if the a/c was still connected. next day, all is well. i have recently changed thermostat--it's been fine until this happened--it seems like it's sticking, opening, closing, opening partially--i just don't know...
wtf???
anyone with blessed knowledge?? thanks!!
