Question 2005 Escape won't start

Back in August I got what I thought was some crappy gas. After I got a full tank, I drove a few miles and after I tried to start the car, the gauges all shook like crazy, and my gas tank read empty even though I had just filled it. After letting it run for a while, the gauge went back to full, and everything seemed fine. A few weeks later, I got gas again at the same gas station, and this time the car wouldn't even start. I had to have it jumped, and it started up just fine. (Both times, I might add, I got the clickclickclickclickclick) Not longer after that, I was at the supermarket and when I cam out, the car wouldn't start. (more clicking and crazy gauges.) Got a jump, worked fine. We decided to replace the battery and it didn't do it again. Then, last weekend, the car decided to just stop working while driving it. This time it tried to turn over, but wouldn't. We had it towed to a Ford dealer where they removed the fuel filter. It was full of what looked like water and dirt. They replaced the filter but it still wouldn't start. They replaced the spark plugs. Nothing. They called me a few days later and told me it was the powertrain, and would cost a total of $1180. I said, "No thanks" and towed it home where it is sitting in front of my house, dead. Any ideas on this? I can't believe a 5 year old car would just DIE like that.
