The Zetec does not have variable valve timing. It is, however, a DOHC (dual overhead cam), 16-valve engine.
I actually like it better than a Honda VTEC because the Zetec has more low-end torque.
I dont know about you, but I dont spend much time driving around with my engine turning 8,000 rpm. Unless you keep the engine near redline, you dont get any of the VTEC benefit.

I know that Ford does something similar on the Triton V8s, but I dont think they do it with their cars yet.
I agree with you though, I like how Ford gives you horsepower and torque that is pretty equal. Compare that to Honda, who gives you good horsepower but very little torque.

Let me clarify a few things here. Ford's 1999 and up Zetec 2.0 DOES have what is known as VCT(variable camshaft timing) which works basically the same way as honda, only Zetecs are only blessed with variable exhaust timing, not intake I believe. VCT MIGHT be standard on the '98 model but I don't know, the valve cover should indicate it if it does. Mine doesn't.
