Default Universal Joint?

Just got me a '89 Bronco II. Engine real strong, truck has 166,000 on it. My question is this. When I put the truck into gear (manual tranny), I hear a clicking noise for a moment 'til rpms get upto 3000, then it stops. The clicking noise happens going into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. I have been told by the seller, that this is the universal joint making the noise. Does this sound right to you guys? Thanks in advance.

if it is a universal joint problem you will hear it mainly in between shifts, (such as when you finally engage second from a 1-2 shift). However, a constant clicking is not usually present. A failed U-joint usually creates a solid clunk between gearshifts. Go underneat the truck and try to rotate the driveshaft (rear) and see if there is any slop. Any motion indicates a worn U-joint.

Hope that helps.

A lot of bronco2's didn't have u-joints, instead they had cv-joints on the driveshaft. If this is your case it could give you those symptoms.
