00 timing belt problem
after I line up the two cams with the tool and rotate the crank 2 times the exhaust cam never lines up I notised that that cam has a cople of degreas of freeplay so how do you get this to line up?
The exhaust cam has somthing on it that the hayns manual dosn't talk about I think this is what is causing the freeplay.

RE: 00 timing belt problem
With the cam locking tool in place there shouldn't be 'any' free play in the cam/s rotations.. With the crankshaft at TDC #1 position (key up), you should then have the #4 cylinder cam lobes in 'valve overlap' with the tool installed.. The crankshaft pulley 'keyway' should be pointing straight up during install.. With the belt in the loose position,, start at the crankshaft T/belt pulley and install the belt in a 'counter clockwise' order.. The hub you see on the nose of the exhaust cam is the variable cam timing hub.. You may need to slightly rotate the hub/sprocket to align with the correct belt/tooth position on the exhaust cam sprocket (keeping the belt snug with the crank and no movement off of TDC),then move over to the intake cam again keeping the belt snug.. The belt should line up with the intake sprocket.. With the belt in tension, you should have the keyway straight up, the cam notches level with the valve cover surface.. You can loosely install the lower timing cover to check the crank position for any movement during the belt install..

RE: 00 timing belt problem
maybe I didn't describe my problem well enough. ok I line everything up the crank mark, the two cams with the tool and both cam bolts are loose than I tighten the cams, remove the aliening tool, and rotate the crank two times when I go to insert the cam aliening tool it will not go into the exhaust cam but the intake cam dose line up. I have repeated this proseger probably a dozen times with the same results I think it is because of the variable timing hub that keeps chaining the exhaustcam every time i try it. any thoughts?

RE: 00 timing belt problem
If you had the tool installed and the cams 'locked' (zero movement) during the complete alignment proceedure, and with the crank position checked with the lower cover or key pointing straight up and didn't move, and needed to rotate the exhaust hub/sprocket slighty to achieve the correct tooth to sprocket contact with the belt, then once the tool is removed the exhaust cam may be slightly over center.. Key word is slightly.. To check, with the belt in tension, crank locked #1 TDC position, you should be able to put a wrench on the cam hex area, and check for cam time/centers by moving the exhaust cam back to center and reinstall the tool in both cam slots.. Should be a small amount of movement...

RE: 00 timing belt problem
yes that is exactly what is happening. I left it that way the 1st time and reinstalled everything and started the motor and it ran but it sounded weird like a wine sound, anyways I shut it off and tryed to restart it and nothing it justed cranked and cranked. so now I tore it apart again to see that the belt is exactly the way I left it so I am assuming that the exhaust cam is to blame. so if you are saying that everything I did was correct then I am at a lost.

RE: 00 timing belt problem
Well I got it running good now. The secret it that you have to set the exhaust cam full advance using the aliment tool in the back of the two cams then check it by turning the crank shaft 2 times and then the intake cam will be lined up but the exhaust cam will be a little retarded and that is normal. thankyou hayapower for all your help.
