1999 SE 2.0 DOHC Timing Belt Walking
Bought car with 140k miles and soon after it jumped timing. I re-set it after removing the top cover and also found that about 1/4" of the belt was worn off by the motor mount. The belt was walking off the cam gears. I purchased a new belt and pulley kit (tensioner and two idlers). When I disassembled the front of the engine I found the lower idler was broken and lying behind the dampener hence, the belt jumping. I installed the new parts using the latest Ford approved procedure and the belt still walks out and is tearing up the new belt. I have looked at and reset the tensioner twice however, it is still walking. Two questions, is there supposed to be a washer between the crank gear and the dampener and, has anyone had to replace the VTC/exhaust gear because it was worn enough to allow walking of the belt. It appears to be walking at this point.
Thanks

Belt tension is critical on the 2.0 and seems to be different or problematic depending on 'who's' car it is Crank and cam end play can be a factor for belt walking and may be worth a check.. Belt walking on the 2.0 is a fairly common problem, and usually surfaces after a repair/hardware replacement.. Another way to set the belt tension 'real time' is to run the engine and set the tension watching the timing belt track on the gears..Too tight and it walks to the outside, to loose and it goes inboard.. Adjust the belt/tension idling centered in the gear, rev the engine and make sure the belt stays tracking (or close to) center correctly..
