98 Ford Contour Timing Belt Problems
Ok, here goes. About a month ago my timing belt slipped. Me and my Step-dad replaced the timing belt and tensioners/idlers. (the problem was the idler completly fell apart). Well a month later im on the freeway and my car dies, and i look at the timing belt, by pulling the top cover back some, and its gone. Get the car torn apart again and the timing belt is in shreds. Replace the timing belt again, 2 days later car dies again, pull back top cover and i can see the timing belt has started shredding again, and has slipped.
Things Noticed:
on replacing it the first time was having a problem with the timing belt walking off the Cams. (DOHC). Turned belt around and it seemed to fix that problem or so i thought.
Question:
There is a Keyed Washer on the Crankshaft pulley. This i am uncertain about. I thought it went on the inside of the Timing sprocket on the Crankshaft, but im starting to second guess myself because i know everything else is correct.
The current installation is: Washer/Timing Crankshaft Sprocket/Cranskshaft pulley.
Should it be: Timing Crankshaft Sprocket/Washer/Crankshaft Pulley...........or...........Timing Crankshaft Sprocket/Crankshaft Pulley/washer.
If there is another possibility im up for any suggestions. I know for a fact that the timing belt is walking off the DOHC's
Thank You
Chris

RE: 98 Ford Contour Timing Belt Problems
I have a 98 4 cylinder contour with a variable exaust cam timing. The timing belt broke. I installed a new timing belt and have set the timung by the book with all the proper tools. When I turn the engine over by hand the exaust cam sroket turns about an 1/8 of a turn before it starts turning the cam. This of course changes the valve timing. Anyone else had this prolem?
