Default 2001 Crown Vic won't idle

This just started yesterday. Went out to car after work and started it. Engine wouldn't idle by itself. I can give it a little gas and it runs fine but dies when I let off. Did the same thing this morning. I kept it running for about a minute and it then would run on it's own. No spitting or sputtering, I can rev it up too, just won't idle. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like the Idle Air Control valve. It sits to the rear of the top of the throttle body housing. Here is a picture of a similar one. Yours will not have the brass looking piece on it.

So, is this a part that would need replacing or cleaning?

That is the part that needs replaced. Cleaning may not help the problem. I don't think it is too expensive. Motorcraft part number is CX-175 . It is about 60$ from Fordparts.com .

OK, thanks. For an update, it was warmer here yesterday when I got off work. About 80 degrees. I started it the first time and it died soon after. The second time I didn't have to give it any gas and it stayed running like normal. I have been thinking it mite be something temperature related. I've only owned the car since June so haven't had it in cold weather till now. I did have to replace the trans about a month ago. The fuel pump went out while it was at the shop. All that set me back $3650.00. They did tell me the engine was in great condition. I really like the car but don't want to be nickle and dimed to death. Thanks again for the info, you've been most helpful.
