Different year transmission 4r70w
Took the trans off my 96 Marquis 4.6L. Asked for one from the junkyard (Along with the Catalyc converter Exhaust section) They gave me one that looked exactly the same EXCEPT FOR,
Smaller Torque Converter, doesn't bolt up to flywheel,
only has 7 wires (Opposed to 9 on mine) Eletric Shift Plug?
Has the number 38 on the bell housing. (Opposed to 37)
Everything else is the same,
The junkyard mechanic insists that this transmission is the same, I was skeptical, when I installed it with my old torque converter, Transmission would not go into gear, overdrive light was flashing.
Also I asked them for the catalyc converters, probably off the same car they got the trans off, they do not match up, the converters themselves are smaller then the ones off my car. Im just trying to figure out what car he got these items off of, because it wasn't a 4.6L marquis. Seems like a smaller engine. Thank you for any information =D

The 4R70 transmission was changed starting in 1998. From '95 to '97 the transmission had a wiring harness inside it, after '98, it has a circuit board.
There is one more change, when Ford changed to the circuit board, they also changed the locations of the various pins that control the transmission, better yet, the plug from the '95 to '97 cars will plug into it, it just won't work.
If you look at the connector on your old transmission, you'll see that it's white, on the new transmission, it's black.

One other thing, it's never a good idea to use your old torque converter with a new(er) transmission, when transmissions go "bad" they usually spew unhealthy stuff into the transmission fluid, which gets into the converter, once it's in there, you can't get it out.
If you put it in the replacement transmission, that stuff will get inside it and ruin it.
