1988 E250 club wagon stalls/dies when put into Drive

Hey all!
Hopefully y'all can help with my problem.
I recently got this van as a work horse to get me through the next year or so.
The van idles just fine, no weird knocking or anything. When I put it into drive, it's revs up and then dies on me. I have to quickly press the gas almost at the same time to get it going. Once it's going though I have no issues. I can slap it into reverse and back into drive with no issues.
I have noticed the check engine light comes on when I don't press on the gas but goes away when I do press on the gas.
I read that it might be the fuel filter. Not sure when the last time it was changed.
Thoughts?
