1989 f350 econoline fuel relay problem
Hi,
Have a problem with the link from ecu to furl relay.
the only error I get is 95 which is it can't connect to the fuel relay.
Have checked relay and works , there is power to relay via yellow cable but no voltage via red cable.
have tightened the bolt at back of ecu ( to be sure is connected)
the engine runs for a few minutes then shuts down but will re start.
sometimes it runs very rich for a while
Wiring is hard to access on follow.
??
thanks
phillip

Which engine is in your vehicle? How many miles, any recent fuel/electrical work?
Did you check the inertia switch which is located behind the passenger side kick panel (Below the dash) You can feel the depression where the reset button has to be all the way down.
If code 95 applies to your vehicle, it involves the fuel pump secondary circuit. That includes the inertia switch and the fuel pump module assy itself.
Before replacing anything , I would suggest that you check and clean any and all ground connections you can find. The reason I suggest this is , it seems there is more than one problem First no fuel, than too much fuel. When we get multiple problems that don't always produce any codes, grounds are a reasonably good bet.Don't overlook the grounds for the fuel pump under the rear of the vehicle.
Let's see what you come up with after the checks.

If memory serves correctly,,,,,,,,,,,,, the ground was located on top of the engine, been a while.
The diagnostic plug has a terminal that if grounded with the key on it energizes the fuel pump relay and sends power through the inertia sw on to the fuel pump itself..
When looking at the diagnostic plug, it looks like a little house.Hold it in that position and looking at the lower right side , there is what looks like a little upside down hat,.Ground that terminal with the key on and the fuel pump should run, Does it?

If everything checks out ok and the pump has power, a little trick that sometimes works , but only once, and that is to with the key on, and the terminal in the red plug grounded, connected to earth, rap the bottom of the fuel tank once or twice. That will get the fuel pump running . That usually only works once because the pump is worn.
At least that allows you to move the vehicle to a better place to either have the pump replaced or do it yourself..
Let us know how you make out with this, thanks.

applied power to pump and worked ran for 3 or 4 minutes then shut down
restarted and run the same but slightly richer then revs increased slightly and died again.
how does the ecm detect the pump is working?
thanks
