1991 e150 5.0 no crank.

So I ended up trying to crank it while cycling through the different gears and that worked! Than I turned it off and it cranked normally again! Happy day indeed.
Now my question is, what do you think caused the problem and what should I worry about fixing? It’s an old van that I just got and needs a lot of upgrades.

I think it is probably your neutral safety switch aka transmission range sensor. It’s like a $60 part and takes like 15 mins to swap out

If everything is working right now , it will be difficult to find something wrong when there is nothing wrong.
I would suggest, if you feel the need to, copy the suggested procedure in the earlier post and save it. As you know if you are ready for it to act up , it won't, that is the way it goes lol.

That is definitely my experience as well!
The only problem now is an exhaust leak in the engine bay and a rhythmic metal shaving sound directly tied to the speed of the wheels. The exhaust leak I’m less worried about short term. What do you think the sound coming from the rear wheels might be?

also there’s a metal shaving sound coming from one of the back wheels that speeds up as I speed up. Maybe it’s a depleted brake drum pad? Any ideas? Thanks so much!

I believe there is more going on here than we realize.
If it was only repositioning the switch assy ,that is one thing, but because the shift position indicator is also lying ,tells me there is more going on here.
If you can , look at the bottom of the shift tube assy close to the firewall. Check if there aren't loose parts there when you move the shift lever.
Before suggesting any addl things, let's see what, if anything, you find, thanks.
