94 e150 heater core replace
#2
There is a special tool to depress the nylon tabs on the heater hoses to assist removing them. Since you are going to replace the heater core anyway you don't need to be too particular about removing the hoses. Once removed you can sometimes place a piece of 1/2 copper pipe between them with two hose clamps and its done until you are ready to install the replacement heater core.

It's not too difficult to replace the core . You do have to remove the heater box assy from the inside of the vehicle. Yes you can use regular hose clamps, but it's a dog to get to where those hoses connect to the heater core, that was the nice part of the snap fit hose clamps they used originally.

All it is , is a horseshoe shaped piece of metal that slips over the nylon tabs and releases them. It has a long handle that allows you to reach back in there easily.
I don't know if you can rent anything like it, but to purchase it and use it only once is a tough call. Maybe you can come up with something to release those tabs and pull the hoses off. I wouldn't worry about ruining the heater core since you're replacing it anyway.
