Since you have the dimensions and location why can't you epoxy a piece of metal to the pan that would do the same thing? The worst it could do is wear a hole in the filter if the filter wasn't held snug enough. I seriously doubt that would happen anyway with he filter replaced along the normal service intervals.
It would do the same thing and cost a lot less than the magnet.
In the event you have to have the trans overhauled or replaced , I would make sure the replacement has the filter "holder upper" in there now that you know about it.
