Thexton mfg. makes a sweet little tool to check Ford OBD l systems and it costs about $20.00.
It is called Ford code reader, tool #443.
It will give you hard codes, continuous codes and also do dynamic testing automatically. That program is in the vehicle computer and not too many folks know about it.
If you decide to purchase one , I should be able to assist you to do unbelievable things testing your 1992 Ford van.
Now the hi idle problem, A serious vacuum leak can cause this type problem.
Hopefully nobody has messed with the throttle body adjustments for idle speed because that is all controlled by the ECA(computer).
In my humble opinion, IMHO , the 92 was a good workhorse and performed well with good maintenance. I might be able to offer some suggestions that you could look into up the road relating to the 5.8 engine.
The tool I suggest will answer your concerns re; idle problem. Unbelievable what this little tool can help you do.
The diagnostic plug only has 6 terminals and is usually located on the front passenger side of the engine compartment just above the starter relay.and battery.

Ok sir thanks for your help I may try to get it started up tomorrow, weather permitting . I may be looking at wrong connector .my 95 f150 had the connector like you mentioned and I was able to do the blink test on it . It had a straight six and a lot more room to work. Unfortunately we did mess with the idle and your right it made it run worse not better.
