Your correct..
With the axles out, you'll need to get them in place meaning correctly started on the side gear teeth and turn the side gears to draw them into alignment with the pinion shaft again. You'll need to turn/roll the carrier to get the best access. May take a couple times, but not too hard to do..

Thanks for confirming that for me. All I need is the slightest break in the weather and a new O-ring and she'll be done.
