vacuum problems
i just replaced the intake/exhaust gasket and put everything back together, problem is whoever had this van before messed up a bunch of the vacuum. the diagram is still under the hood, but i cant read it. does anyone know how i can get a hold of the vacuum diagram (that is understandable to a layman) for a 1980 econoline straight 6 4.9 liter 1BBL? Also, when i had the intake off i noticed that to the right of where the fuel line connetcts to the carb there is another place for SOMETHING to go. fuel came out of this point but nothing was hooked up to it when i was removing the intake. any idea what goes there?

RE: vacuum problems
i bet that is it....its the only thing i can think, every vacuum hose is connected so it has to be that ill check. so ive replaced the intake/exhaust gasket, cleaned the plugs, timed it the best i could and made sure all the vacuum lines are hooked up. now it runs sounds good doesnt sound like its missing or anything, BUT when i give it gas it cuts off the fuel and dies. sound like the EGR valve to you?

RE: vacuum problems
....don't think so...have you checked the accelerator pump in the carburetor? With the motor off,air cleaner off so's you can peek into the carb throat, work the throttle from full closed to open. You should see or smell gas squirting into the carb throat. If not you may need to rebuild the carb...I'd only do this if you're experienced. There are small parts, which can be dropped ,lost, misplaced etc. You'll need a clear workbench with newspaper etc to keep the job clean and help you organize your parts. You WILL spill gasoline,so work in an open or well ventilated area....with plenty of light.

RE: vacuum problems
i noticed that while i had the intake off yes it did wquirt gas into the carb throat. however i was thinking about rebuilding the carb anyway. rebuilt the carb on my 65 t-bird and it came out ok, and people tell me the 1BBL is easier to work on so i should be able to do that. how easy should it be to open the EGR valve when i have it off? it took some pressure to move it open and closed. just wondering. and lastly if i cant find the charcoal box or whatever its called is there somewhere i can route a hose that would decrease the small of gas inside the van? sorry i have so many questions i just havent worked on my own vehichle in a while and there are a lot of things ive forgotten. thank you very much for the help youve given me so far i really appreciate it.

RE: vacuum problems
....it's been awhile, but as I recall,my'81 300 six had both an EGR and heat riser valve. The EGR valve unit was between the intake and exhaust manifold. The heat riser valve ( a bimetal thermostactically operated butterfly valve) was in the exhaust manifold, and was used to help the automatic choke draw heatup to it.I replaced the automatic choke with a manual choke kit to simply.
I never did make use of the EGR...seemed like separating it was a bitch.I had swapped out the original 240 six in my '69 F100 for this later model 300 six,and switched a bunch of things from the earlier 240....
