what function does this serve?
This object (photo 1) sits on the driver's side midway between firewall and front. What is it for?
I removed some wires from the two connections closest to the firewall.
One of the wires, (the one connected closest to the firewall) went through the firewall and under the floor mat where it just lay, unconnected.
The other wire went through the firewall and connected to the fuse panel (photo 2).
I removed these two connections because they were not stock and were very shoddily connected. My van still runs without them.
One connection, that is clearly not meant to be connected, is still attached to the object, (photo 3).
Does anyone know what this object is for, and what connects to the four connectors.
Thank you

In photo #1 can't see if anything is connected to the other large terminal on that solenoid.
Can you tell where that wire with the yellow terminal goes to?
I can see that it connects to another plug , but where does that wire go to?

Thanks for the reply hanky.
The reason you cannot see wire connected to the first terminal in photo 1 above is because I had already removed it by the time I took the photograph.
In answer to your second question, the first and second photos below show where the connection goes to.
The third photo shows the butchery involved in this connection. It also shows some more butchery to the left of it, which by the way, was what I believe the previous owner had connected to the solenoid. He had cut the yellow wire, connected it to the brown wire via the pink connector, and to the solenoid. He changed his mind, cut the brown wire, connected it to a black wire via a pink connector, and connected it to the fuse box, as in photo 2 above. This wire, from solenoid to fuse box, has been removed.
Photo 4 shows the brown to black wire via pink connector. It is easy to see how the previous owner had cut things up.
And so, this brings me to my original question. What is that device for, and should there be any wires connected to it?
By the way, the connector, second from the front on the solenoid has a wire going from it and connecting to the mounting bolt of the solenoid, as can be seen in photo 1 above.
Thanks again,

I am working on locating a wiring diagram for this vehicle. The blue wire that connects to the solenoid mounting is the ground wire for the solenoid to work.
I need to see where that pink wire goes.
It seems like overkill for an anti theft system, but some people do strange things.
Where did the wire that you removed from the other large terminal come from?

I managed to locate a wiring diagram for a 1989 E series with 5.8 engine. It is extremely important to know the exact colors of the wires that have been cut.
The heavy yellow wire, does that go to the fuel pump relay or to the starter solenoid?
I need to get the color of the tracer on the cut wires. For example , red wire with yellow tracer stripe.

Thanks again hanky. I would have replied sooner but I have been working on some other areas of this van. Basically, removing small parts, cleaning them, putting them back, and getting myself familiarised with all that lies on top and around my engine.
It did not come from any where in particular. I simply removed my floor mats and found it lying there. I traced it to the solenoid. All 7.5 feet of it. The first photo below shows both ends of it.
First, the only wire that was cut was a light yellow one. But it was a dead end wire to begin with. (As shown in the third and fourth photos of my second post).
Second, I have no idea where that heavy yellow wire goes to. I have not yet removed enough parts to trace it.
Thanks again,

It would seem that if nothing is connected to that extra solenoid , I would remove it and plug the holes they made.
So far cannot tell where or what the person might have used that solenoid for.
They may have tried to make an anti-theft device,
Tried to bypass the fuel pump relay,
Tried to control some accessory that is no longer in the vehicle.
When you get the time to obtain the rest of the wire paths we may be able to see where and what it might have controlled.
