Default 2006 Merc mariner engine

How do I tell if the water pump in my 2006 Merc Mariner with a 3.0L is intake or exhaust driven.

I don't want to appear stupid, which I don't need any help, but are you sure the water pump isn't belt driven?

The water pump is belt driven by either the intake or exhaust camshaft. I need to know how to tell which camshaft drives the water pump. I have been told the engines are not interchangeable. If your water pump is exhaust driven you can't replace the engine with one in which the pump is intake driven.

I believe it is exhaust cam driven. Can't you confirm this by checking with a dealership by giving them your vin # ?

I did ask the dealer & they said it was exhaust cam driven but I just wanted to make sure myself since the exhaust cam driven is the rarer of the two by about 10 to 1. It is all academic since I have found a shop that will replace the engine with a low mileage used one & they will make sure they get the right one.
I do appreciate the help & attention. I will continue to check in as I like this forum.
Thanks!!!!!!!
