Default Help - Key will not fit in ignition

Leaving work at 7:30 pm I entered my 2003 Ford Escape only to find that my original key would not fit in the ignition. It would only go in about 1/3rd of the way. When I exited the car in the morning the key pulled out fine. So its not like it broke off. Why?????????? Frustrated I just left my car at work and figure I'd deal with it tomorrow. But if anyone has any thoughts on this problem...I would love to hear.

Any other things not working properly, like the steering lock? Those two things always seem to be connected when problems arise. Did the ignition turn at all?

The ignition did not turn at all. I tried the gear shifter and steering wheel. But I locked up the steering wheel in my attempt that maybe the ignition was locked.

okay it happens now and then that the tumblers inside the barrel of the ignition/key unit drop a pin which stops the key from going into the barrel. the replacement barrel and key set is available in many places (Ford/Oreillys etc) for about 70 bucks.
the steering and transmission will remain locked, as this is the normal condition if the key is not inserted.
you can tow it to a shop, or replace the ignition unit where you are. I googled for instructions on disassembly and replacement ant it is easy.
Hope this works out for ya
