02 Escort noisy when pushing on gas pedal (but not always)

I just bought a 2002 Ford Escord LE with 45,000 miles. It runs great. The engine is very quiet when idling.
It also runs quiet when I slow down (basically when I am not pushing the gas pedal) BUT .. most of the time (I have not had the car long enough to have more details) it is louder than I believe it should be when we push the gas pedal.
It seems to be from the engine or exhaust but on a 4 yr old car with that little mileage?
Any idea where I should look?
Thanks
Nick

Hard to tell what the noise is on an internet forum, but it could be either the front wheel bearings or the bearing on the right front axle-shaft making the noise. Does it change in pitch when cornering?
