Default 96 Ford Escort 1.9 Camshaft

My wife started her 96 1.9L escort to let it warm up, She went out 10 min it later, and it was stalled she said it ran ruff when she tried to start it again. When i got home I started doing some diagnoses. The ultimate conclusion is that the camshaft has snapped dead center of the engine, and amazingly still runs on #1 and #2 cylinders way ruff but still runs. I have partially disasembled the top half inspection moving components, and everything seems to be within spec. I'm guessing this is just a 1vbillion fluke that never happens unlucky/bad casting. My question is that has anyone installed a cam on this model 96 escort 1.9L sohc, and can you install a cam without pulling the head. I've done alot of looking under the hood and taking measurments, I believe that I can hopefully install the new cam without pulling the head if I remove the motor mounts and jacking the engine approx 8in" which I should be able to get. any ideas or comment. Please reply this could save me 3-5 hrs of repair time. Thx for your help.
