Default '98 Escort Interior Lights Not Working, Help!

Checked the fuses, checked a few other things, but the interior lights and dash board are out. Makes it hard for night driving! Before it gets pulled all apart (ugh!), any suggestions???

Thanks for asking for more info. I guess for now, I'd forget about the dome light and concentrate on the instrument panel. We took the "head?" - instrument panel out on Sunday (it's a unit unto itself) and used a circuit checker thing with a light on the end to check the white plug parts where the male and female plug in. All places worked that Jim stuck the screw driver-like thing in. So he thought I need a new panel. The bulbs were fine too. FYI-The idiot gauges work when initially turning the car on ie: oil, ABS, etc. But no light for gauges of gas, speedo or radio once the headlights go on. The radio light also comes on initially but then does not stay on. I *think* this only happens for night driving. The radio lights are on for daytime (when the headlights are not on). It's my daughter's car so I haven't used it much but I'm driving it now to figure this out. If it *is* the panel, what do they get for a salvaged one? I don't want to pay alot (of course) in case the whole cardies soon or if once I buy it, the problem isn't solved. One never knows....

I would lean to a Bad connection to the Main Board of the Dash light...this could be a variety of things...Short in the System...Bad Connector... or a Relay in the main Fuses box.

There are two Gentlemen here in this forum that I believe that would have a better idea on this problem...I will attempt to e-mail them on this...and will advise...

Thanks for the input and I'll wait to hear. I should also say it has a bad dimmer switch - which I've read could tie into the problem - but that has been bad for over a year. It would be odd that that problem plays in now since the lights just stopped working recently. And yes. The radio and gear shift lights do not work once the headlights are turned on. It's ALL dark in there. Good thing I know my way around!

The dome light has been out since Sept when my mother in law gave the car to my daughter. It was my Uncles car and he recently passed away. Car is a 98 with 59000 miles and daughter has been getting driving classes, she is on her permit. Nice first car but anyways I came home the other night and the dome light was on. No one has been the car since 3 days ago. ???????? Is Uncle playing a joke? I noticed there is a TSB-9819 -Intermittent inoperation of the dome light, I was wondering if this also might be your problem?

Dimmer module would be the place I'd look.. It varies the resistance to/for thepanelect. for lamp output, and you can check there for power distribution available for the lamp function (since the fuses checked out) as well as bridge the module connector to prove out the function...

I had similar problem I would suggest you to check the fuse as well as the earthing systems of the vehicle. If the earth wires are faulty, the lights would go off. AUTOMANIX Auto Review | Know Experience and Share Up for more details
