automatic transaxle help
#2
One of the best sources is the Ford Shop Manual for your particular vehicle.
When does it make this noise , in any particular gear position and are you positive its the transaxle, before you go through all the trouble to remove and rebuild? Is it possible the clunking could be coming from a halfshaft or something else in the driveline? Just trying to save you some extra work and expense. Do you have the necessary tools to completely disassemble the clutches etc.? Have you rebuilt any other trans units before this one? Not knowing the answers to these questions it is impossible to say whether the job is difficult or not.

Transaxle help
I have rebuilt the old Ford C6 trans. and a Dodge 727 trans. I have all the tools to do these transmissions but I do not know what tools are required to do the transaxle. And my son took the car to Amco and an independent rebuilder and they both said it was the transaxle.

In that case in my opinion, the only difference is the chain and the two gears it works with, otherwise its no big deal. You should have no trouble doing a rebuild. Have done a few , you might want to invest in a set of plastic side gear plugs to keep them in place when assembling. It seemed more trouble to remove and install than the rebuild itself. From your past experience ,I'm sure you will find it not much different.
If you decide to replace the low-rev clutch seal, you will need the special plastic tool to assemble it, there is no way you can get it together without it. The springs and accumulator pistons are a little different from the way the other (727) are , but if you are careful on disassembly and set up the parts as removed you should be OK.
