Default Bad Gas mileage? can it be improved?

I have a 97 Escort, automatic. ~105k miles. Its only getting about 160-200 miles to the tank on the street and 200-250 on the FWY. 98% of my driving is street driving. 160-180 is normal for my tank and that seems HORRIBLE. My 87 Jeep Cherokee was getting the same mileage. Does this seem bad to any other Escort owners? I've recently changed a whole bunch of stuff on the car: from all kinds of sensors, to fuel and oil filters, air filters, spark plugs and and wires, vacuum hoses all over the engine bay, fuel regulator sensors etc etc.

Is there any kind of economic solutions to improving the gas mileage on my car? I want to avoid goofy gas additives unless you SWEAR by it. I've heard those products are bad for your car and they're just gimmics anyways.

Any suggestions, comments?
