Changing Headlight? - '99 Escort ZX2
Hi guys,
Sorry if this is a trivial question but i am not having much luck. I have a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2. At first i noticed the drivers side idle light (ie. the front light that comes on when your just driving in day time, not when you turn on the headlights) was not working. When you turned on the headlights it would start working. However now it does not come on when you turn on the headlights at all. I am hoping this is a simple light bulb replacement?
I went to take a look at it but i could not for the life of me access the drivers side headlight. What i saw was a small black plug but i couldnt unplug it. There also seemed to be a covering which i had no luck turning.
Can anyone assist me with this? Really dont want to pay the overpriced mechanics in town just to change a lightbulb ! It is very cold up here in the north so im wondering if the plugs and what not were all frozen stiff.
Thanks for any assitance !

The daytime running lamps (DRL) controlmodule operates the high-beam headlights at a reduced voltage when the ignition switchis in the ON position, and the parking brake/H/L switchis OFF.. The DRL system uses the high-beam filament of the headlamp, and has a voltage reducing resistor to dim the headlights for daytime operation. Theflash-to-pass function is still available during DRL system operation.
Here's a few pics of the bulb replacement...
1. Note: .Make sure that the headlamp switch and the ignition switch are in the OFF position.
Detach the headlamp electrical connector from the headlamp access cover.
2.Disconnect the headlamp electrical connector
3.Remove the headlamp bulb access cover by rotating it counterclockwise
4.Remove the headlamp bulb.
[ol][*]Disconnect the connector from the bulb by pulling rearward.[*]Rotate the headlamp bulb retainer one-quarter turn, counterclockwise and remove the headlamp bulb from the headlamp by pulling it rearward.[/ol]

RE: Changing Headlight? - '99 Escort ZX2
thanks so much for that prompt and detailed reply. I will give it another try tonight after work. It seems i was on the right track it was just that i had no luck unplugging the connector or unscrewing the access cover. However it is a bit warmer than when i first tried (although still 10 or so degrees below 0) so maybe i will have better luck.
Once i have the bulb i assume i can get the correct model number so i can get a replacement from my local auto store, however does anyone know off the top of their head what model number or bulb number i need to get?

Just wanted to say thanks again for the reply. The pictures helped a lot. After work i was able to access the lightbulb as above. The dust cover was sure tight so had to kind of press on it to rotate it with a screwdriver. Picked up a replacement bulb for $15CAD and all is working fine now ! Thanks again !!
