Clunking Noise in Front End

Clunking Noise in Front End
1997 Ford Escort 186K miles
Tonight while driving home we noticed a clunking noise coming from the front underneath of the car. The sound only happened while we were moving and did not change in frequency in different speeds. I think it may be the bearings or drum as I have had a car that made this sort of sound and that was the case then. Any help would be very much appreciated!

RE: Clunking Noise in Front End
A bearing noise wouldn't be a clunk except maybe when turning but it would have to be pretty loose. The front brakes on these cars havediscs instead of drums and that's where the bearings reside. Are you sure the wheel lug nuts are tight? Does it clunk only when hitting bumps or at all times? A bad Mcpherson strut could cause a clunk but it usually would be when going over a bump or.CV joints 'clunk' but usually only when turning. It could even be a loose plastic shroud waving in the breeze....
Good luck!
