Default gasoline odor at rear driver side

I am new to this forum having just picked a great looking, very low mileage 98 Escort. I have noticed a gasoline smell from under the filler neck (I did not overspill or overfill). Checking underneath there are no obvious leaks in the lines or hoses, nor is anything wet from fuel. Any suggestions would be welcome (before the snow arrives). There appears to be a hose running into a square box at the corner - is this a evap cannister or something to do with emissions? Could this be clogged or leaking vapors? Thanks in advance for any help.
