Ignition key won't turn to Lock position

Ignition key won't turn to Lock position
On my 1996 Escort LX, non-tilt steering column, the ignition key won't turn back far enough to LOCK position, and key remains in ignition. I can still turn it forward to engage the starter and drive, but I can only get the key to turn back to the ACC position (1). I have tried dry graphite lube, and failing that I have tried PB Blaster penetrating lube, which didn't work either. Anyone else have this issue? Is there a hidden key release button that I'm not seeing. Ignition worked fine the first 2 weeks since car purchase. Does ignition need to be replaced, and is it easily done? Can a new ignition be keyed to my current key set?
Thanks all

Hello and good day:
First NEVER...EVER...spray something into the ingition...you may damage(or already have) Key Electrical Connection, and Parts..
I have seen this problem before, and is a fairly a easy fix.
OK Now you may want to go to your local Auto Store (AutoZone, Advance Auto, NAPA) and purchase a Haynes Repair Mnual...For the Ford Escort & Mercury Tracer Year 1991 thru 2000 Manuel number #36020.
In section 12-10 to 12-16 will give you detail instruction on how to remove your Steering Column, and remove your Ignition switch.
Your Ignition switch has malfunction...If your Key is stuck in the switch you will need to disengage the Locking Cylinder...to do this...And Before you take off the Cowling around the Steering Column...Now Replace you ignition switch...per the instruction given in the Manuel.
Good luck on this....any problem get back to us.

On my 2002 Escort, non-tilt steering column, the ignition key also won't turn back far enough to LOCK position, and key remains in ignition. I can still turn it forward to engage the starter and drive, but I can only get the key to turn back to the ACC position (1) and it is pinging. also the gear shift is not locking in park if that might have something to do with this. can anyone help? cause i'm not sure if mine is the same thing.
