Default Stripped lower alternator bolt...

I have a '97 Ford escort LX. I am trying to remove the busted alternator, and somehow the lower mounting bolt got stripped, rounded off...it's a very tight fit for my hands. There is only about 9 or 10 inches in there to work with and I need this bolt off...It's a 3/8, if that helps...Any advice or tips?

Default RE: Stripped lower alternator bolt...

I always drillout broken bolts/studs.The key is to use a small drill bit, then keep going wider until you're able to pull the bolt out with your hand, and NEVERlet the drill bit make contact with the outer edges of the bolt/stud.

Here'sa link that provides this method, as well as others (excellent article): http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/may2003/techtotech.cfm.
