1997 Ford Expedition Shifter Always One Icon Before
I have a 1997 Ford Expedition whose shifter placement is out of alignment. Let's say if I want to put my vehicle into Drive, I have to match the icon with the Neutral icon in order to go on Drive, and so on with the other transmission icons.
Does anyone know what type of problem this is? Can I do this repair at home or do I need to order parts in order to put the shifter back into alignment with the proper icons?

If it is what I think it is , very simple problem to correct.
If you remove the 2 or 3 screws that hold the plastic covering under the steering column just below the steering wheel you will see a clip attached to the shift tube. This clip has a string/cable attached to it that moves the pointer to indicate the position of the shift lever. It may have come loose or just shifted some. All you need to do is place the shift lever in Neutral for example and move that clip and string to align the indicator. That's all there is to it !
