Default RE: 4x4 does not work at all

I was having sort of the same problem. My 4x4 would sometimes work, and sometimes not. Completely random. I have a 1998 Expedition w/ 125000 miles. I had it in the shop doing PM, and had them look at it. As luck would have it, it worked fine for the mechanic...so when I tried it, it went into 4x4, but not out. I was told that there are two parts to the 4x4 system besides the swich itself. The solonoid and the transfer case motor. They said it could be either one that was acting up, but hard to tell which. I just had them replace both parts to be sure. It now works even better than it ever had before. Cost with parts and labor was about $350, but I not have the piece of mind knowing it WILL work when I want it to.
