The last time I got involved in a mirror job I recall there being two little electric motors in the mirror assy. They are of course reversible and that is how you get 4 directions of movement. I would start with the switch that sends the signal to the mirror motor in question. Depending on whether you have a signal (voltage) going into the switch and coming out when activated will determine your next course of action. Let us know if this was any help.
Not wanting to confuse you,
"Ford vehicles now have a front electronic module, a rear electronic module and a driver's door module."
Closing the switch sends the signal to the affected module which then sends the signal through the data bus to the module at the other end in this case the mirror or visor lamp or liftgate . This was done to reduce hard wiring.
Sometimes you need to find the modules in order to determine if they are receiving/responding to the signal.
