I have a '03 Exp. 5.4l 60k miles.

I noticed a bit of jerking seemed to be around gear shifts. The engine died a few times, idle and driving. Changed fuel filter still occuring. Not actually durring shift but through the process of coming up to driving speeds. Went to Auto Zone got generic P codes. Yes codeS.

P0320 Crankshaft position sensor. (also Possible distributor tachometer sensor)

P0354,0355,0356,and0358. Cycl. D,E,F, and H respectively. What cyc is for what letter? 1=A 2=B?

Would changing the crankshaft position sensor correct the cyclinder codes? $20 for the crankshaft sensor as compared to $50ea /cycl for coil.


Any suggestions?

Crank sensor is more common than the coils.

 

Found the location of the sensor. Looks like a DIY with little swearing. lol. Gonna be a bit tight to get my hands around in there.

Changed the crankshaft sensor yesterday am. Same symptoms showed up. Back to Auto Zone, scanned, P0320. Damn crankshaft sensor.

Or to be exact:
The PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for the engine speed input. (Crankshaft position sensor, distributor tachometer signal etc.)

I drove it today and I noticed it seems to occur at gear shifts?! If we ease up to cruse speed it seems to happen less often.

Would the transmission getting funky bogg the engine to cause errors to show?
Would a cyclinder misfire produce this as a wrong code?

I will try to get Auto Zone to replace the crank sensor this week when their truck come in, on the off chance the sensor is bad out of the box.

I know the firing order but what is the location of the cylinders? Driver side front to back 1-4, or is it passenger side?

Mine did the same thing but figured out it was a bad tank of gas. I was able to top off the tank with premimun gas and added some fuel ssytem cleaner and after a few days, all was fine.
