My 02 XLT V8 started slipping while shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Brought it in to a local shop and found out that I need to replace the trans. Found out that they didn't look at anything, just used their experience with these "sealed" transmissions, which "have a tendency to go bad on Explorers". It's got just over 100k miles and no work has been done on the trans. Is it not advisable to at least change the fluid and filter first?

 

Suggest getting a second or even a third opinion.
