Default 2017 Explorer stalled while driving

My wife’s 2017 explorer with the 2.3 quit accelerating while she was driving the other day. Then it went back to running normal. It did this twice and she made it home. I got in it to drive and it completely stalled out at about 30 mph and will not start back. I’ve tried using starting fluid and can’t get it to fire so I’m assuming it’s a spark issue? Anybody have any ideas? I was thinking throttle body but I would think it would still fire with the starting fluid.

Also, the check engine light is not on and there are no codes.

Did you actually use a scan tool to check for stored codes? That needs to be done. You are right, it is not throttle body. Check for spark. From your description, sounds like an ignition system issue. If no spark is present on all cylinders, I would look at a device which would affect all cylinders (globally) such as the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. If a COP or plug failed, you would likely have some sort of activity from the engine.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I used a OBD scanner.

Here’s what it showed.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I used a scan tool. I’m trying to upload the pictures of what it showed. I’ll check for the spark and see what I can come up with. Thanks

Is it possible for the sensors to be bad and it not throw a code?

Yes, it happens sometimes. However, hard failures usually are logged as a code if the fault is consistant for a pre determined amount of time..Intermittent failures will often not set a code.

I replaced the crankshaft sensor and it didn’t change anything. I got it to start one time with starting fluid and it ran for a minute then died and I haven’t been able to do it again. So apparently it fired at least one time. Any other ideas?

Before spending any more money, check for spark and fuel pressure.

Do you know how to check for spark and fuel pressure?

Yesterday, I removed the coil and plug, grounded it, and tried to crank the car and didn’t see any spark. It throws me off that it started that one time because that would mean that it did fire. Since it wasn’t starting with ether I just assumed it was a spark issue and not a fuel problem. The only other thing I can think of is the camshaft sensor?
