Default 97 XLT : Check Engine light will not read

My wife's 97 XLTs check engine light is on so I took it to Auto Zone today to have it read and the reader would not read it or reset it. It has come on before and then went off on its own so I am as concerned about checking the port to make sure that it is working as I am the actual codes. How can I make sure that the port is actually working?

Thanks,
Randy

You might check for a blown fuse, this would cause it to not communicate. The fuse should be the same one as for the power point, I believe.

Default Problem Solved, Thanks

You are absolutely right it was fuse #5 on the inside panel. I was able to get the code read and cleared at Advance Auto Parts . The problem the code turned up will be a bit more expensive though, it was the catalytic converter.

Thanks,
Randy

Might not be as bad as you think. I believe there is a TSB on ineffiecent cat codes (Po430/P0420) that involved a reflash on the PCM. Had to do mine on my 98 5.0L about 4 years ago, never had it return.

Default So far So good!

Thanks again, so far it has not returned but I'll keep an eye on it.

Thanks,
Randy
