Default 98 ABS light and no speedometer

98 explorer ltd 4.0 4x4 - ABS light came on today and the speedometer stopped working. the fuel economy display (i assume) uses the same sensor as the speedometer, as its data became inacurate at the same time. Does anybody know what sensor I need to change or test?My ford service dvd (96-99) is scratched or something, asI keep getting a script error whenI try to open the wiring diagrams, so any help here would be great.

Thanks

Test the rear ABS sensor. It is mounted in the top of the rear diff. Ford says to check for A/C voltage while turning the wheels but I think the sensorshould be about 1.2k to 1.4k ohms. Fairly common part to go bad.

Thanks for the advice Jr78. I can see the sensor (Part# 9E731) and will check the resistance today and report back. I was reading about newer explorers having a similar problem but becauseof ashard of metal sticking to the sensor inside the dif case. Was this an issue with 98s, or should i not bother and just replace thepart?

I haven't pulled the numbers from the tag on the rear end yet, but i'm guessing it is an Ford8.8. Does anybody know if this vehicle hasa Traction-Lok rear end?Do i need to pull the #s from the tagon the rear end?Is traction-lok justa fancy name for Limited-Slip, or Posi, meaning I cannot turn the rear tires independantly like other rear ends?

The part you need to replace is the rear speed sensor, it is a F85Z-2L373-AC, or Motorcraft number BFAB-130.
