Default Air Filter

I have an 96 Explorer 5.0L V8. After owning the car for 2.5 years and it getting oil changed and inspections and other work done I had a mechanic tell me that the air filter (conical) should have a cover on it. Now I've replaced it twice since I've owned the car and never even thought about it before. Is there a cover for this air filter? Anyone know?

Thanks

Default RE: Air Filter

Weather it's a panel or conical type, it came from the factory with a fully enclosed filter housing. It maybe an aftermarket type conical filter (A.K.A. cold air intake). However, these non-enclosed filters actually suck in hot under-hood air which actually reduces HP output. It will increase mileage if your not on the throttle as the computer will retard the timing and cut back on the fuel delivery. However, the reduction in HP and the "COOL"throaty sound generally causes one to step into the throttle more causing a loss of mileage. Also, the air flow under the hood is more turbulant adding to the reduction in HP.
