Default computer codes

Just wondering if there is any way to obtain the engine codes from a 2000 explorer. I live in an isolated area unable to get to a mechanic with scantool.

i have 1995 explorer ,and no scantool at autozone or advance auto, only 1996 and newer!! how do i do the paperclip test and where do i check codes?what two holes on computer checker do i put paperclip in?how do i read codes and where can i reference them? check engine light comes on after engine runs 10 mins.i fixed head gasket no more leaks,unplugged battery and still check engine light after 10 mins,start cycles???
