Default Jumpiness during acceleration

the car:

98 ford explorer sport
2wd, manual, v6
120000 miles

the problem:
When I am accelerating between 20-40 mph the car begins to shake, not violently, and the engine gets jumpy. It has never been a major problem. But I know that it can't be good. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I recently thought this was a transmission problem. I replaced my plug wires. The boots were worn and may have been causing an electrical arch especially when under a load. Hope this hopes.

Did you have any other problems at the same time? Was your check engine light on?
