Default Smoke from driver side rear wheel well

Hey there everyone,

I was recently given a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT and I've been using it as my primary vehicle the past few months with no issues. However, last night when I pulled into my driveway I noticed smoke coming from the rear, driver-side wheel. The smoke was accompanied by clicking noises (almost popping noises) that were not the usual ones of the exhaust metal cooling down. There was also a distinct odor which is obviously hard to describe over the internet. Any ideas? I'm thinking a stuck brake caliper? If anyone could help a new Ford owner out it would be greatly appreciated! I'd like to start my new ownership maintenance on the right foot. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the site John..

Could be the caliper/eBrake.. Generally when the brakes hang up it will generate excessive heat as well.. Is there 'more than usually' brake dust accumulating on the wheel? An indicator that the brake may be hanging up.. As well as bluing of the rotor if dragging, or any 'unusual' surface color changes or scoring compared to the other rotors.. Hot brake lining is hard to describe as far as smell, but has a pungent and distinct odor.. Not like rubber, plastic, oil ect.
