tranny slips in first gear

tranny slips in first gear
I have a 94 explorer 4x4 XLT. Everything about the car is in perfect condition for as long as I've owned it. The transmission has always shifted smooth. Recently, when I put it in drive and press the accelerator it acts as if it is slipping, not wanting to go into gear. Then it finally gets into gear and it has no problems with shifting up from there. After it has been running and is warm this problem will not occur. Do I have a tranny problem? Torque converter? I'm not completely car stupid but I'm young and I'm learning. Thanks for the help guys.

RE: tranny slips in first gear
Check your transmission fluid and make sure it is full in between the line when its cold and hot. If it is low then add some more fluid and see if that helps. If it is full or burnt smell then you need to take it to the transmission shop.
