Default Transmission or Transfer case?

Just as my 98 4x4 passed 150,000 miles last week it began to whine and 'disconnect' the engine from the wheels when I let off the gas to slow down. This is the worst going downhill, and I work at the top of a mountain. There's a loud whine from under the vehicle and the rpm goes to 950 and will continue to whine until I either stop the thing or if I press on the gas. The higher the speed the higher pitch of the noise. When accelerating or maintaining speed in either 2wd or 4wd high, there's no whine and it runs fine. In 4wd low there's no problems what so ever. I've never heard of this and I would appreciate ANY help as the nearest dealership is 30 miles away.

Thank you
