Default 1978 Ford F150 - Need a bit of help.

I love this truck. But, I'm having a problem with the fuel gauge. It's always stuck on empty, so I never know how much gas I have. Could this be just a short or will I need a whole new sending unit?

Thanks!

From what I can recall, with 78 year Ford veh., if the wire from the tank unit to the gauge is open the gauge will read empty, also, if the float came off the float arm on the tank unit the arm will go down to the bottom and send an empty signal to the gauge in the dash. I believe a quick check was to ground the wire from the tank unit and the gauge should read full. If this is done somewhere near the tank it would confirm the wiring is OK. Let me know how you make out. Thanks, hanky

The floats like to crack right under the retaining hook on the sender arm and will sink the float.. As Hanky said, ground the sender and it should peg the fuel gauge..

Default 78 F150 Fuel Gauge reads E

I have the same problem, a 78 F150 with a fuel gauge stuck on "E". I tried grounding the wire near the tank. It had no effect. Also, the wire from the dash to the tank reads 0 volts both at the dash and the tank. I'm stumped. Right now I keep my mileage and know how far I can go on a tank of gas. I try to refill about every 100 miles or so. I'm open to ideas and suggestions.

Just had the same issue. Pulled the sending unit and the float was full of fuel. Tiny pinhole under the hook. Drained it and dropped some solder over the hole. Working for now.
