new update. i put the truck up on jack stands( all 4 wheels ) and manually put it in 4hi then put it in gear. all 4 wheels spin but as soon as i hold the front wheels they stop spinning and dont keep spinning when i let go, even when i give they a little help. any idea on what could be goin wrong in the transfer case?

Check your front axles and u-joints on the axles to see if something broke. You may have snapped an axle, u-joint, or u-joint/axle yoke.

Did you hold and stop just one wheel, and if u did the other wheel will keep turning. If u don't have a limited slip diff or locker setup diff. the wheel with least resistance will still turn due 2 the spider gears transferring torque when the other is held. After u check that by holding each wheel seperately 2c if the other is turning and that checks out ok, then get a friend 2 get in the truck and give it some gas to apply torque to the drive wheels at a higher speed 40mph. Now all 4 wheels should spin and it would b very hard 2 stop one from turning. Let me know what happens.

check if front driveshaft is turning while in 4x4 while front wheels are stopped(if turning). If it does spin then u might have front diff problem (broken case pin or spider gears or broken axle). c if u can hear any unusual noise from front diff. If there is no output to front driveshaft to diff then the transfer case has an issue. If axles r cv boot type try 2 push in toward diff while in gear 2c if anything changes, but use caution while doing this as axle might catch.

ya im pretty sure that its a transfer case problem. the front drive shaft turns at first when i put it in 4x4 but as soon as i stop both front wheels it wont turn any more even when i let them go. lets like somethin in the transfer case is slipping or not engaging, cause i dont hear any grinding or anythang out of the ordinary. you know where i can get an exploded view of the transfer case?

go 2 parts dept. at dealership and they can print you what you want but tell them you need the printout 2c what your going 2 need 2 replace and buy from them. This way u shouldn't have any problem as sometimes they'll just show u the exploded view on their screen and ask want u want. Make sure u get the tag off the transfer case which is held on by one of the bolts. Also get vehicle door jam info ie: engine, trans. rear diff etc. code #s Any tags from powertrain will b usefull 2 them. I can't remember what your driving but I have good knowledge on Ford products.

Good Luck!
